Lore: The Stories Behind the Games

Let’s start out with the definition because I love definitions. You can never know too many words.

    lore
    1  [lawr, lohr]
    –noun
    1. the body of knowledge, esp. of a traditional, anecdotal, or popular nature, on a particular subject: the lore of herbs.
    2. learning, knowledge, or erudition.
    3. Archaic.a. the process or act of teaching; instruction.
    b. something that is taught; lesson.

Every single game we play has lore behind it. From Nintendo’s Super Mario World, to the games of today including World of Warcraft. And to think something like 85% of the WoW population has no idea who the people they kill in dungeons and raids are. Can you believe it?

When I do anything in life, I like to have a clue what to do, and the background behind it before I jump in. It would be like moving to France and knowing nothing of the culture or language. People need to get back in touch with what the game is! Blizzard has a HUGE following. Something like 11 Million people play this game YET ~9 Million are clueless.

I am not saying everyone should wowwiki or wowhead everything so they are as knowledgeable as some of the older players, but I am saying you should at least know that Arthas was the Prince of Lordaeron, which is current day the top of where Undercity is. That is just to know your villain.

Along the lines of lore, I would also like to point out that people don’t read quests. I am guilty of this too, though I have read most of the quests at some point on one of more of my characters. Reading your quests gives insight into what the whole game is about… It might even inspire you to go after some new achievements and earn new titles. (Loremaster, Ambassador, Diplomat, ect.)

If you enjoy lore, like I do, I encourage you to read outside sources (a.k.a. Non-Blizzard employees). Some of the best stories come from truly talented people, who also play the game for fun. One of my personal favorite stories is found on fanfiction.com by the name of The Gravedigger (and the other GD stories) By Fros X. Socker

Do you have a favorite lore story? Do you know the lore behind your favorite game?

    The Spiral Downward

It seems that everyone I talk to while in game cannot stand what is happening with the expansion, World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. Every "new" fight is just an old one revamped with different colored armor. I don't mean to sound ungrateful, because, let's face it... there aren't any MMORPGs out there that come close to touching Blizzard's Epic Game.

I loved vanilla WoW. I loved how hard it was... the challenge to get the kill. 40 people working together to conqueror old gods. Then The Burning Crusades came out, and the level of difficulty was changed. It no longer took a 40-man team to defeat our world's villains, but a measly 25. Even still, we fought on conquering old enemies, and found new friends.... but this was just the beginning. We were not prepared. Blizzard released expansions within BC to continue to challenge even the strongest players. Floating fortresses crumbled, Mountains were crushed, Troll Kingdoms fell, and the Sunwell was vanquished... and we were left in limbo. The release of Wrath was supposed to prove to gamers out there, that Blizzard had not lost their touch. They were releasing about the same time as Warhammer and this was going to be the expansion to surpass all dreams. Yet, less then 1 year after the release, Blizzard has announced the next expansion.

Gamers flew through Naxxaramas without flinching. The once infamous dungeon became this expansion's laughing stock. Even Karazhan posed more of a challenge by the end of BC then Naxx does now. What a shame... We moved on to kill the dragons of our new frozen waste. The Spell-Weaver fell, as did Sartharion without any second thoughts. Though a few heroes were lost along the way, Fordragon and Saurfang's Son, we marched on to the new threat of an old enemy, Yogg Saron and Ulduar. Ulduar was a place of wonderments. It was not as easily destroyed as it's predecessors, but it too was conquered. It feels as though Blizzard has given up on this expansion. That they have chosen to cut their loses and move forward.... Is it too soon? Is it fair to the gamers to just stop this expansion, off the Lich King, and move on? When we kill the King of the Dead, the once Prince of Lordaeron, do we celebrate or do we cry?

It seems that in this expansion, the forests of Lordaeron whispered, Failure.

    Video Game Syndrome

SO AFTER MANY MANY ANGRY FITS (AKA NERD RAGE MOMENTS), ALL THE YELLING AND SCREAMING, AND 2 VERY BROKEN MICE, I THINK I HAVE COME TO THE RESOLVE THAT PEOPLE PLAY VIDEO GAMES THE WAY THEY TREAT REAL LIFE.

I PERSONALLY, PLAY WORLD OF WARCRAFT, OR WOW FOR SHORT. THIS GAME HAS BEEN DEEMED, "ADDICTIVE" AMONG OTHER THINGS. THAT IN ITSELF SEEMS IRONIC... ADDICTION. APPARENTLY ADDICTIONS OF ALL SORTS ARE BAD. I MEAN, I REALIZE COCAINE, ACID, AND OTHERS HAVE THE "ADDICTION" BUT A VIDEO GAME?

WHENEVER ANYONE SEEMS TO HAVE A FIT, PEOPLE GIVE THEM ALL THE SAME EXCUSE OR REASONING LOGIC BEHIND THEIR IDIOCY... "DUDE... IT'S JUST A GAME." MEANWHILE THE OTHER POOR GUY IS FLIPPING OUT... "OMFG ARE YOU SRSLY GUNNA NINJA THAT #%$@ !!!! WTF!"

NOW, FOR THOSE WHO AREN'T GAMER KIDS, LET ME EXPLAIN THIS SITUATION. IN WOW, YOU HAVE NO REAL CONTACT WITH OTHER PLAYERS UNLESS YOU ARE "RAIDING" OR PVPING (PLAYER V PLAYER). OTHER THEN THAT, YOU COULD BE IN GUILD OF SORTS, OR JUST MESSING AROUND. PEOPLE SPEND DAYS AND DAYS PLAYING THEIR CHARACTERS. THEY LEVEL, MAKE FRIENDS, RAID, PVP... EVERYTHING ON THESE CHARACTERS.... AND NOW SOME DOUCHE BAG FELT THE NEED TO TRAMPLE THEIR FLOWER GARDEN.

I HAVE HAD SEVERAL ENCOUNTERS WITH PEOPLE WHO PLAY LIKE THIS... THEY WON'T, CAN'T OR DON'T EARN THEIR OWN STUFF. I MEAN, YES, THEY ARE PIXELS, BUT MOST OF US PLAY THIS GAME BECAUSE OF LOCATION, OR OTHER ISSUES (SOCIAL OR NOT) AND YOU HAVE NO RIGHT TO DESTROY THAT. ALSO, IN LIFE YOU DON'T JUST GO "EH, NO WORRIES, I SUCK @ LIFE BUT YOU KNOW WHAT... YOU SUCK MORE! I MUST MAKE YOUR LIFE MISERABLE SINCE MINE SUCKS SO MUCH!" AND I MEAN... IF YOU DO... I AM REALLY REALLY SORRY.

NOW, BACK TO THE ADDICTION THING. ADDICTION BY DEFINITION:

    AD·DIC·TION
    N.

    1.
    1. COMPULSIVE PHYSIOLOGICAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL NEED FOR A HABIT-FORMING SUBSTANCE: A DRUG USED IN THE TREATMENT OF HEROIN ADDICTION.
    2. AN INSTANCE OF THIS: A PERSON WITH MULTIPLE CHEMICAL ADDICTIONS.
    3. THE CONDITION OF BEING HABITUALLY OR COMPULSIVELY OCCUPIED WITH OR OR INVOLVED IN SOMETHING.
    4. AN INSTANCE OF THIS: HAD AN ADDICTION FOR FAST CARS.
    2.
    1. THE CONDITION OF BEING HABITUALLY OR COMPULSIVELY OCCUPIED WITH OR OR INVOLVED IN SOMETHING.
    2. AN INSTANCE OF THIS: HAD AN ADDICTION FOR FAST CARS.

OK! SO YES, WE PLAY FOR FUN, BUT BECAUSE WE HAVE TO? I DON'T SEE THAT. I HAVE PLAYED THIS GAME FOR NEAR 4 YEARS NOW AND HAVE YET TO MEET SOMEONE WHO HAS TO PLAY. ISN'T ADDICTION BY THE DEFINITION WE ARE USING IT IN, A MENTAL WEAKNESS. HOW MUCH DOES YOUR LIFE HAVE TO SUCK FOR YOU TO CRAVE A GAME... MAYBE CRAVE THE SOCIAL INTERACTION BUT NOTHING FOR THE GAME ITSELF?

MORAL OF THE STORY... PEOPLE NEED TO STOP GIVING WACK EXCUSES FOR THEIR IDIOCY... OWN UP TO THE FACT THAT YOU CAN'T BE GOOD AT YOUR HOBBY AND YOU WANT TO FEEL BETTER ABOUT YOURSELF. STOP BLAMING EVERYONE ELSE FOR YOUR PROBLEMS. OWN UP TO WHAT YOU DO EVERY MOMENT OF THE DAY, THERE IS NO REASON FOR BLAMING ANYONE ELSE FOR "ADDICTIONS" YOU HAVE A WILL POWER AND A CHOICE.
